My mother, Hermia Fraser, was a prolific British Columbia artist and published author who was ahead of her time. Her work began at the end of the Victorian era, through the late 1970's. She was an art activist and teacher who travelled and lived in the lower mainland and the interior of British Columbia. Hermia spent time in Oregon and California researching for her writing, and travelling in Europe developing her art. She usually travelled alone as it allowed her complete freedom -- she often sketched her subjects for later adaptation to canvas. She also took black-and-white photos from which she would create oil paintings. As a teacher, she loved to influence her students to pursue artistic endeavours, to instill them with self confidence.
